Mother's Day 1999
by Marybeth Ward
Video, a time-based medium, allows me to manipulate time and space as a means of exploring perception. Borrowing upon rituals and existing historical imagery I create work that explores my history as a woman and an artist and my inner vision of myself. I am particularly interested in the point at which history and memory collide.
Mother's Day '99 was created as a tribute to my mother, who died that year. I made cards at that time to acknowledge all the condolences I received, but what I would have liked to do was to send this memento.
Marybeth Ward is a video artist with a background in the avant garde theater; she has for many years been associated with La MaMA Experimental Theater in New York. Her recent installations--Triptych #!: Eclipse, Reflexion, and Infinity; Reflexions on Gogol; and Things That Quicken the Heart--have been presented in New York and Spoleto, Italy. She is currently working on a three-channel video installation that will incorporate imagery from Mother's Day '99.
